EnergyCare has kicked off its 2014 Summer Cooling Program. Now in its 29th year, EnergyCare’s Summer Cooling Program has assisted over 5,000 low-income medically at risk families with one room, energy efficient air conditioners.

The Center for Disease Control says that extreme heat is the most destructive natural disaster in the US today, killing more people annually than hurricanes, tornados, floods and earthquakes combined. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, St. Louis has the 4th highest rate of heart related deaths in the US and in the heat wave of 2012 the lives of 26 of our neighbors were claimed.

The EnergyCare Summer Cooling Program service priorities include low-income older adults, people who are seriously ill, people with physical disabilities and families with seriously ill children or infants who do not have an air conditioner in their home. For more information, call 314-773-5900.

In an effort to help as many people as possible this summer, EnergyCare is collecting new and used, but working, window air conditioners of less than 8,000 BTU. If you are interested in donating an air conditioner, please call 314-773-5968 ex. 23.
