Childress: “Oh it saved my life!” [Client of the Week]



Childress has been on quite a journey since she became an EnergyCare client. One recent hot June day, EnergyCare’s development team arrived to visit her at her new apartment in a senior living complex. She proudly showed off an old coffee table that she had fixed up by spray painting it and covering it with a mirror from her bedroom. She also gave us a tour of the apartment complex’s garden where Childress had her own planter box where she is growing tomatoes and greens.

Things weren’t always this way, though. Two years ago, Childress returned home to find that her window units had been stolen, leaving her with no air conditioning in her home. “I didn’t have that money again [to replace them]. It was in a bad situation …and the little fan they gave me wasn’t helping – circulatin’ hot air,” she said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s page “Tips for Preventing Heat-Related Illness” says: “Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath, or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off.” Moving to an air-conditioned space wasn’t a viable option for Childress. “I had developed chronic bronchitis. Heat was not an option for me… I said ‘Lord, I need some type of help’,” says Childress. Then she remembered a brochure she had picked up at her doctor’s clinic – and she called EnergyCare for help.

EnergyCare was able to provide an energy efficient window unit air conditioner to keep Childress safely cool in the bedroom where she stayed at her daughter’s house. What did Childress think of her new air conditioner? “Oh it saved my life,” she said. “I’d go in my room and shut the door. I said, ‘y’all hot? Bring the babies in here’. Me and the 4 year old would sit in there and watch TV.”


Childress said, “…to me [EnergyCare is] a great organization. They’re helpful. I mean, to me they were a Godsend. …They told me if something went wrong to call them, call the number on the air conditioner, don’t even take it to the shop.”

That’s because EnergyCare maintains ownership of all the air conditioners we provide. When something goes wrong, we fix or replace them. And when Childress was able to move out of her daughter’s home into her own place that had air conditioning provided, she was able to call and our service providers picked up the unit so that it can help someone else who is still in need.
